Lace 'em up! 90th running of the Tely 10 race set for Sunday

About 4,700 people will take to the streets of Paradise, Mount Pearl and St. John's on Sunday for the 90th running of the Tely 10.

"I think a lot of people see this as a challenge or a goal, something they put on their wish list," said Randy Ball, the Tely 10 race director.

Records are on the line

On one runner's wish list is a record number of wins.

Colin Fewer has won nine races and is hoping to beat Pat Kelly's run as greatest racer of all time with a 10th win.

"We would love to see it happen. It's great to see records broken; that's what they're made for," said Ball.

Jennifer Murrin will be competing in her third Tely 10, and she's a serious contender.

"I do put the effort in and I've trained hard all year," Murrin told CBC.

Murrin is hoping to finish the race in under an hour. Fifty-eight minutes would be ideal for her.

"My goal all year is to go sub-60. That was the goal and I think I've proved I'm going to be able to do that," she said.

More than a provincial race

There are runners participating from all across the country, and more.

"We have runners from all over the world — Malaysia, Qatar, the Middle East. It's an international event," Ball said.

Lisa Dempster, MHA for Cartwright and L'Anse au Clair, will be running the race for the second time.

"I wouldn't classify myself as a runner," Dempster said.

"Last year my sister, 12 years my junior, registered both of us. It was a bit of a challenge to me and I got a little training for it and made it over the line in two hours and six minutes," she said.

"It's going to be pure spunk that carries me this year."

Traffic beware: this will affect Sunday morning all across the city. Exercise caution near the 10-mile route.

The route

The race begins in Paradise on McNamara Road, off Topsail Road, near the Paradise Community Centre. Runners then head east on Topsail Road to Cornwall Avenue, LeMarchant Road, Harvey Road and Military Road, turning left onto Bannerman Road for the finish line.
