Lafontaine Tunnel to undergo repairs on Thanksgiving weekend

Drivers heading into Montreal from the South Shore over Thanksgiving weekend will need to find an alternative to the Louis-Hippolyte-Lafontaine Tunnel.

Transports Québec says the northbound lanes will be closed from 11 p.m. Friday until 2 p.m. Monday.

Workers will be on the scene around the clock to add monitoring and drainage equipment inside the tunnel that links the island of Montreal to the South Shore.

Officials said the tunnel has had minor water infiltration during the winter months since it was built in 1967.

On Aug. 20, the northbound side of the tunnel was closed for about six hours after an RV's engine caught fire.

Transport Minister Robert Poëti said at the time that 10,000 feet of electrical wiring inside the tunnel was damaged in the fire.
