Landfill fire north of Liverpool under control
Fire crews from across Queens County and Lunenburg County continue to monitor a fire at the Greenfield landfill, just north of Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
Chief Moyle Conrad of the Greenfield and District fire department said they were notified about 9:00 a.m. Sunday by a passerby who spotted the smoke.
At last count, 11 fire departments were involved with the call, some of them coming from as far away as Hebbville and Lunenburg.
By 1:00 p.m. the fire was under control with crews using bulldozers to move garbage around and water being pumped up from a nearby lake.
With temperatures close to 30 C, Conrad said the heat was a challenge and Emergency Health Services paramedics were also called to help with any heat related issues crews may have.
The same landfill had a fire two years ago and Conrad said that one took four days to put out so he's pleased this one has been controlled so quickly.
"It burns deep, you have to put a lot of water on it, do a lot of turning up of material," he said.
Conrad said the landfill was closed as it was Sunday, so no one saw how it may have started, but he has a theory.
"This would probably be just combustion, over time. As people know, garbage makes heat and nice 30 degree temperature, that's probably all I could speculate," he said.
