Lane closures planned on some of busiest SC interstates for Helene cleanup. Here’s where & how long

Some interstate lanes in South Carolina will be closed soon for Hurricane Helene cleanup.

As if Interstate 85 is not difficult enough to navigate, here comes storm cleanup along the route in Greenville County.

Beginning Saturday, temporary lane closures will be in place for the next week on Interstate 85 as well as the connecting Interstate 385 and Interstate 26 in Spartanburg County, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said.

The road cleanup is from the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which stormed through South Carolina on Sept, 26, downing hundreds of trees and power lines, ripping off roofs and flooding streets.

I-85 is one of the busiest truck routes in South Carolina and several interchanges report high accident rates. In some sections, traffic volume is as high as 124,000 cars per day.

SCDOT encouraged drivers to slow down and pay attention to signs and crews when driving through the work zone.

Also the agency asked drivers to go other ways if possible. That information is available on the SCDOT 511 app or by visiting 511sc.org.
