LaSalle council unanimously votes to move Strawberry Festival to Vollmer

It's settled — the annual Strawberry Festival is moving to Vollmer Culture and Recreation Complex.

LaSalle town council voted unanimously in favour of the new location suggested by administration in a special meeting held Thursday afternoon.

The move was suggested by staff because Gil Maure Park, the festival's usual location, has water pooling in certain parts from spring rains. Staff worry about the safety of setting up a festival with such wet conditions.

Coun. Jeff Renaud said one of the biggest concerns with relocation will be parking.

"Administration is working on some other plans to possibly get some extra buses, or to get some shuttles from other places in town," he said.

The issue is there aren't a lot of side streets around Vollmer for people to park and then walk to the festival, according to Renaud.

The initial figure for relocation is pegged at $45,000, which staff say is a high-level figure. According to Renaud, the cost could be lower because they worked out a solution for the water supply.

The festival will take place June 6 to June 9. There will be a parade along Front Road the morning of June 8, unchanged from the original plan.
