Tenants of a North York apartment building are calling on their landlord to rescind all temporary eviction notices issued to people who live on the first floor. The notices, known as N13 forms, have been issued to about a dozen tenants of 1570 Lawrence Ave. W., a six-storey building with 87 units. The evictions will allow workers to complete major renovations while the tenants are out of their units. On Sunday, about 20 people protested the notices by putting up flyers on poles near the Greater
HAPPY CAMP, Calif. — A wildfire burning in a remote area just south of the Oregon border appears to have caused the deaths of tens of thousands of Klamath River fish, the Karuk Tribe said Saturday. The tribe said in a statement that the dead fish of all species were found Friday near Happy Camp, California, along the main stem of the Klamath River. Tribal fisheries biologists believe a flash flood caused by heavy rains over the burn area caused a massive debris flow that entered the river at or
BEIRUT (AP) — A ship bringing corn to Lebanon’s northern port of Tripoli normally would not cause a stir. But it's getting attention because of where it came from: Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Odesa. The Razoni, loaded with more than 26,000 tons of corn for chicken feed, is emerging from the edges of a Russian war that has threatened food supplies in countries like Lebanon, which has the world's highest rate of food inflation — a staggering 122% — and depends on the Black Sea region for nearly al

He was then run over by the horse that was right behind him. "[Island Beach Boy] was sent to the front, and as they reached the 3/4 pole near the end of the race, there wa

There are at least two millionaires in Toronto who don't know it yet. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) says no one has claimed a $55 million Lotto Max prize, adding the ticket was sold somewhere in Toronto. The jackpot winning ticket was drawn on Friday, with no claimants. Another ticket, drawn June 28, with a jackpot prize of $70 million has also not been claimed, OLG says. That ticket was also sold in Toronto. Claimants have one year from the draw date to claim their prize. Pla
LEEDS, England (AP) — American midfielder Brenden Aaronson helped Leeds open the English Premier League with a 2-1 comeback win over Wolverhampton on Saturday. Aaronson, making his debut for Leeds after joining Jesse Marsch's team this offseason, looked poised to convert a cross from Patrick Bamford in the 74th minute after a run into the area, forcing defender Rayan Ait-Nouri to stick out a foot for an attempted clearance that ended up in his own net. The own goal completed a turnaround for Lee
MONTREAL — The justice system in Quebec's northern Nunavik region should be better adapted to local culture and have a more permanent presence in the area, according to a new report. Jean-Claude Latraverse, who practiced law in the region for 20 years, wrote in his report that technology also needs to be used to improve access to justice in the region's 14 communities, none of which are accessible by road. "It is of primary importance to recognize that the system, as it currently exists, has fai
At a World War Two memorial event in the Solomons' capital, Honiara, Sherman rebuked governments that she said sought to dismantle the rules-based international order. The Solomons surprised their neighbour Australia, and the United States, this year by striking a security pact with China. "President Biden has made solidarity with the Pacific Islands a priority for his entire administration from the very beginning," Sherman said at the event, also attended by top diplomats from Australia and New Zealand.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The administration of President Joe Biden on Saturday condemned Indiana's new ban on abortions, calling it another extreme attempt by Republicans to trample women's rights. Indiana on Friday became the first state in the nation to approve such legislation since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a 1973 landmark case that had protected the right to abortion nationwide. “The Indiana Legislature took a devastating step as a result of the Supreme Court’s extreme decision to overtu
Following the death of his mother, Vancouver filmmaker Manny Mahal realized he knew precious little about his father, particularly his life in India before he moved to Canada. He decided the best way to learn about his dad was by doing what he knew best — making a film. For My Father, which is available on CBC Gem as part of the Absolutely Canadian series, is the result of Mahal's journey to bridge the cultural gap between himself and his father. Growing up, Mahal said he was very close to his m
LONDON (AP) — Erik ten Hag pleaded for time after starting his Manchester United reign with a disappointing loss. Erling Haaland didn't need much time at all to show what kind of impact he will have at Manchester City. The two biggest offseason arrivals in Manchester had starkly different starts to the Premier League season on Sunday. Ten Hag looked grim-faced on the sideline as the Dutch coach watched United slump to a 2-1 loss to Brighton at Old Trafford, with his side being outplayed in the f

LONDON (AP) — Tottenham recovered quickly from going a goal down and routed Southampton 4-1 in their English Premier League opener Saturday to show the team's new strength in depth. Attacking duo Harry Kane and Son Heung-min failed to get on the scoresheet, but it was fellow forward Dejan Kulusevski who orchestrated the comeback. The Sweden international set up the equalizer for Ryan Sessegnon before he slotted the fourth goal himself after the break, following an Eric Dier header and Mohammed S

Gasoline and diesel prices fell by nine cents and six cents per litre, respectively, as part of a weekly price adjustment on Friday. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden tested negative for COVID-19 on Saturday but will continue to isolate at the White House until a second negative test, his doctor said. Dr. Kevin O'Connor wrote in his latest daily update that the president, “in an abundance of caution,” will abide by the "strict isolation measures” in place since his “rebound” infection was detected July 30, pending a follow-up negative result. Biden, 79, came down with the virus a second time three days after he had emerge
