Laval cat killer sought by SPCA after dead kitten found

The Montreal SPCA is looking for the public's help to catch a cat killer in Laval after the discovery of the body of a mutilated kitten on Belcourt Crescent in the Duvernay district.

A concerned citizen who found the body of the kitten brought it in to the SPCA two weeks ago.

SPCA staff have since begun referring to the dead kitten "Abel."

Alanna Devine, the director of animal advocacy for the Montreal SPCA, said the injuries to Abel were "horrific."

"There was a deep cut from his chin and throat area down to his shoulder which entirely cut out a section of his front limb and slit open his throat," Devine said.

More cats killed in same area

She said the SPCA has confirmed through autopsies that two other cats found on Belcourt Crescent have been poisoned in the last year and a half. She also said SPCA investigators are tracking reports of bodies of other cats spotted in the area.

Devine said there are some people living on the street who are feeding and caring for colonies of feral cats. She said it's possible that someone upset with that practice is taking it out on the cats.

Devine said photos of Abel's injuries were too disturbing to release, but that the SPCA has released a photo of a kitten similar to Abel to show what he might have looked like before he was killed.

She said they're hoping to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard something suspicious in the area.

"Sometimes someone sees something and it doesn't click in their head that it may be suspicious, but sometimes the smallest detail and the smallest tip can give us a lead," Devine said.

She said the perpetrator could be charged under the Criminal Code with causing unnecessary pain and suffering to an animal, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Devine said anyone with information can contact the Montreal SPCA's inspection department at inspection@spca.com or (514) 735-2711 extension 2230.
