Police in Leeds have launched a murder probe after the bodies of a 10-year-old schoolboy and his mother were discovered in their home.

The body of the boy was discovered in a flat on Cross Ingram Road, Holbeck, last Thursday, by West Yorkshire Police.

The boy's mother, 30, was also found dead in their home.

Neighbours assumed the mother and son, whose identities have not yet been revealed, had gone to their home country of Portugal, where they would often visit, but as weeks passed they became "worried" and raised the alarm.

The house was cordoned off after police arrived on Thursday.

West Yorkshire Police said initially: "While enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of their deaths, officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.”

West Yorkshire Police have now issued an update and confirmed that the boy's death is being treated as murder.

The force said: "The death of the boy is subject to a murder investigation.
