Legally Blonde, everything expo & stargazing: Calgary weekend entertainment

Hulk returns to Calgary, pumped to meet expo fans

Spring has finally arrived in Calgary, and it's a great time to get out and enjoy our city's arts and entertainment scene. Here's a few options to keep you busy.

Expo

To some, it's Christmas in April as the 2018 Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo gets under way.

The show started from humble beginnings, with a small gathering in 2006 and it's really grown over the past 12 years. It now attracts around 100,000 people every year.

A lot of people excited about Jeff Goldblum this year. He's well known for The Fly, Jurassic Park and Thor: Ragnarok.

Some of the other celebrities coming this year are Elijah Wood, the cast of The Princess Bride, and of course Lou Ferrigno, who came into studio on Wednesday.

The doors open Thursday, but it's like Stampede's Sneak-a-peek because the official opening of the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo happens after the parade Friday morning.

POW! Parade of Wonders starts at 10:30 a.m. at 8th Street S.W., making its way down Stephen Avenue ending at Olympic Plaza.

Here's all the info you need on the Calgary Expo.

Stargazing

With the beautiful weather in the weekend forecast, it should be a great weekend for stargazing.

The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory has a special open house called Astrophysics on the Cutting Edge. It all happens Saturday evening and you don't need to be versed in astrophysics to enjoy it.

The University of Calgary astrophysics students will share their discoveries, and part of the presentation will be on how to observe the night sky.

So if you enjoy stargazing but maybe don't know what to look for, this could be really useful.

People will have a chance to look through telescopes and watch Venus moving past Taurus across the sky and it'll be close to a full moon on Saturday.

It runs Saturday for about three hours starting at 8 p.m.

Here's the details on the event, and here are directions on how to get there.

Legally Blonde

The 2001 hit movie with Reese Witherspoon is about a young woman who gets dumped by her boyfriend and decides to follow him to law school to get back at him.

Character Elle Woods ends up learning a lot about herself in the process.

Stage West has an award-winning musical based on Legally Blonde and it runs until June 24.

Here's all the information you need.

Market open

Market Collective is holding its first market for the 2018 season. It showcases the work of local artists and includes local music, food and even cocktails.

It's also dog friendly so you don't have to leave Fido at home.

The first market runs Friday through Sunday at the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre.
