Legend Has It returns to Alberta Theatre Projects

If you don't mind having zero control over how your evening will unfold, then you'll probably enjoy the show Legend Has It.

That's because you, your teenage daughter — even the child sitting with his family three rows behind you — could end up starring in it.

Every night, the cast will randomly pluck a person from the audience to play the hero in the fantasy adventure.

"The show changes quite every time we work on it," said creator, Rebecca Northan, who stars in the show with her brother Jamie.

The show is improv, after all. That said, there are some recurring themes.

It's always set in a make-believe world called Jaro which is populated by Mumplings.

And those Mumplings need a hero (that could be you!) to defeat an evil wizard named Haldor.

The show premiered a few seasons ago at Alberta Theatre Projects (ATP).

Since then, the Northan siblings have been developing it further at Loose Moose Theatre in Calgary.

Kid 'genius'

It was there, says Jamie Northan, that the show really changed.

"That was kind of a turning point for us. For the first time, we picked a kid," he said.

"He was a little genius and gem. He totally changed our view that we could pick kids. Prior to that, we always picked adults."

The ATP website describes the show as being suitable for "audiences six to 106."

It runs until Dec. 31 at the Martha Cohen Theatre in Arts Commons.

If you're nervous about the idea of being cast in the show, Rebecca Northan says the hero does have a superpower.

"They can call time-out and they can stop the play anytime they need a little check in."
