Lexington Christian cruises to spot in final round of KHSAA girls state golf tournament
Lexington Christian’s C.A. Carter shot a 4-under par 68 to top the field at this year’s KHSAA State First Round girls golf tournament at Winchester Country Club on Monday.
Carter, a senior committed to play in college at Kentucky, had the only round under par among 78 golfers. She helped LCA finish first as a team, which qualified the Eagles for next week’s Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac KHSAA State Final Round girls golf tournament at Bowling Green Country Club.
The State First Round was held at three sites across Kentucky on Monday with three teams and 15 individual qualifiers from each site advancing to next week’s State Final Round.
As a team, LCA shot 27-over par to top second-place finisher Lexington Catholic by 17 shots on the Winchester Country Club’s 5,634-yard layout. Carter’s 68 combined with an 80 from Grace Soale, an 81 by Carter Lankford and an 86 by Caroline Lankford for the best four-out-of-five total. Lila Bard’s 88 was tossed out, but she will join the team in Bowling Green.
Lexington Catholic (+44) and third-place finisher Montgomery County (+67) also advanced to the final round as team qualifiers.
Rowan County’s Athena Singh topped the list of 15 individual qualifiers for the finals, shooting an even-par round of 72. Madison Southern’s Kasey Cameron (+1) and Henry Clay’s Kylah Lunsford (+1) finished in a tie for third. Lunsford won the Region 9 individual title last week.
Other final-round individual qualifiers from central Kentucky’s Region 9 were Henry Clay’s EP Cassidy; Franklin County’s Mary Clayton Rodgers, Emerson Bowling and Claudia Logan; and Madison Central’s Haley and Mackenzie Federspiel.
LCA heads to state off back-to-back team wins in the Region 9 and State First Round tournaments, but those scores won’t help them in the two rounds played for the state championship in Bowling Green, as none of those postseason scores carry over.
The teams joining LCA, Lexington Catholic and Montgomery County in Bowling Green will be Marshall County, Bowling Green and Daviess County out of the Calvert City Country Club competition and Sacred Heart, Cooper and Owen County from the Kenton County Golf Course site.
Among the individual qualifiers from those tournaments was defending state champion and 2022 Miss Kentucky Golf Trinity Beth, who shot a 2-under 70 in Calvert City.
