Liberals leading in Ontario as early results trickle in

·1 min read

TORONTO — Early results are trickling in across Ontario and a strong showing in the Greater Toronto Area appears to be helping propel the Liberals to electoral victory.

The Canadian Press is projecting that the Liberal party will win the most seats across the country.

As in the last federal election, the Liberals have swept up Toronto and much of the surrounding areas.

The Conservatives lead in the riding of Thornhill, north of Toronto, but the rest of the GTA electoral map shows red from Whitby to Burlington.

The Greens are leading in Kitchener Centre, though only a fraction of the polls have reported so far.

Across the province their support stands at about two per cent, while the People's Party is pulling in six per cent of the vote, though not leading in any seats.

There are reports of long lineups at some polling stations, with voters waiting several hours to cast a ballot.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 20, 2021.
