Linnea Veinotte is still missing in Grenada, police say

Police in Grenada are continuing to search for 36-year-old Linnea Moore Veinotte, who they say went missing while out for a run in the island capital of St. George on Sunday morning.

Veinotte, a mother of two young sons, aged five and six, was born in New Denmark.

Her parents, Rev. Doug Moore and his wife Karen, live in Fredericton. Moore is the pastor at St. Matthew's Lutheran church.

Sylvan MacIntyre, an assistant superintendent of the Royal Grenada Police Force, says Veinotte's dog, Nico, was found injured, and contrary to reports, is in stable condition.

MacIntyre says police believe both the dog, and possibly Veinotte, were struck by a vehicle.

"Members within the community did indicate that they did hear the screeching of a vehicle in the area and an impact. It was very evident that an impact had taken place," he said.

MacIntyre said more than 50 officers are involved in the search in an effort to find the missing Canadian. In addition, he said many members of the community are involved.

"They are accompanied by other security units, private security units, members of the community, members of the staff, students and faculty of St. George's University are also on it, so there are at the moment in excess of 100 persons as part of the search effort," said MacIntyre.

He says the investigation is still very young and is a first for his force.

"We've never had an incident where someone … was reported as a hit and run accident went missing," he said.

"It is not Grenadian-like to be involved in persons being abducted, or hijacked or missing."

Although police released a statement Monday saying Veinotte had been taken from the scene of the accident, MacIntyre says the case is still being treated as a missing persons case.

MacIntyre said Veinotte's family are understandably upset.

"The family obviously seems very distraught over this situation. The husband is co-operating with the investigation. He's assisting the police in any way he could."

Rev. Doug Moore says his daughter, who did a postdoctoral fellowship in microbiology at Dalhousie University, works at St. George's University in Grenada's capital of St. George in the student learning centre.

He said his daughter and her husband Matt, and their children had just returned to Grenada earlier in the fall, after having been back to Lunenburg, N.S., for a year where they had been living.

Matt Veinotte has offered a $100,000 EC ($50,000 Cdn) reward for information on the whereabouts of his wife.
