Little red Corvette wrecked by Leslie a write-off

Glenn Petten's 1984 Corvette, after tropical storm Leslie went through his neighbourhood last week.

The image was an iconic one from the aftermath of hurricane-force winds unleashed on Newfoundland by tropical storm Leslie — Glenn Petten’s little red Corvette, crushed under his shed.

The car is now in its final resting place, at a local salvage yard.

But even though he'll never drive it again, Petten says he's already gotten a lot of mileage out of the story.

"It's strange to pull in the driveway and not see the car," Petten said.

On the day Leslie blew into town, Petten's daughter posted a picture on Facebook of the Corvette pancaked by the overturned shed.

A half hour later, the cars started coming ... and coming.

“It was unreal the amount of traffic that day,” Petten said.

The photos sped around the world, making headlines in major newspapers, and becoming the punch line of many jokes on Twitter.

The good news?

Petten has been told the damage is covered by insurance. And his shed is back in place.

He's already looking online for his next Corvette.
