'Loki' finale on Disney+: Canadian actor Tara Strong spills on sneaky Miss Minutes

Marvel’s Loki series on Disney+ has come to an end and while Tom Hiddleston paved the way, one of the sneakiest characters in the series, the animated Miss Minutes, is voiced by an exceptional Canadian talent, Tara Strong.

Strong explained to Yahoo Canada that there was mystery around the character at the outset.

“I didn't really know much about the character,” she said. “Normally when you have an audition for a character they give you a drawing and they give you a background of the character,...it was very limited information and I asked my agent to get more and she couldn't.”

“It wasn't until I was working on it, that day, and got to meet Kate [Herron] and the rest of the team that I knew exactly what I was doing, and even with that, learning about who she was, it was sort of a as we go process.”

With little concrete information on who Miss Minutes was, much of the development of the voice was the process of Strong trying different things and tweaking along the way.

“In the scene where Miss Minutes is on the desk jumping away from Tom [Hiddleston] as he's swatting at her, we must have recorded, I don't know 20, 30 more sounds to play with,” she explained. “It was extremely collaborative and mostly with Kate who I've completely fallen in love with.”

“She's such a visionary, watching this world that she's put together is so beautiful and so smart… We recorded it on Zoom and I watched her face while I watched some of the action, I'd go back and forth to her to make sure we were getting it right and then to whatever was happening on the screen, and it was collaborative and live, as much as it could have been without me being on set.”

Miss Minutes has this now iconic accent, which Strong describes as a “soft Southern vocal,” which also just came out of Strong being asked to try an accent at the audition.

“I think the reason it works is she's saying very dire, somewhat scary things but she's saying it with a smile on our face,” Strong explained.

Strong has voiced some the most beloved animated characters including Bubbles in The Powerpuff Girls, Timmy Turner in The Fairly Odd Parents, Dil Pickles in Rugrats, Raven in Teen Titans, and even Hello Kitty when she was just 13 years old (she can still do the voice, by the way). Even with all that experience, joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe was exciting for her.

“I know this sounds cheesy, but it really is such a big honour to be a part of the Marvel Universe anyways, like when I was working with Stan on Spider Man it was so great to have him come in and work with me,” Strong said. “And then to graduate and go to the MCU and be a part of this huge cinematic universe has been such a thrill.”

As Loki fans took to the internet each week to share their theories on Miss Minutes and her involvement in the TVA, Strong was following the theories as well.

“All the guesses about who she is, I see it all,” she said. “I don't respond to any of it but I see that part and...it's just heartwarming to see how much they care and how much they love her.”

'I've missed the winter'

The Canadian actor stressed that she is very grateful to have started her career in Toronto, being able to work on over 20 animated projects before she actually made the move to Los Angeles.

The mother of two shared that both of her children can do voices as well. While her older son is a musician, who actually wrote the theme song for her podcast "The Ship-it Show," her youngest wants to get into animation on the producer side.

“He like only watches animation now and over COVID both my kids got into every anime show,” Strong said. “It's been really fun actually for them to explore different things."

While living in California, Strong also admitted that she does actually miss the cold weather in Toronto.

"I flew up with my boys and our dogs in August of last year to get ready for Pretty Hard Cases and so we were there from the summer, and I feel like I forgot that your body changes in the fall," she explained. "That first snowfall was so magical and my boys loved it so much."

"One of my dogs is a Bernese Mountain Dog who'd never experienced snow and first she was afraid, and then when she ran out into it she was done for... I've missed the winter, I didn't think I did but I did, and I think I've got to come home."
