First The Idea Of You, then A Family Affair, now Lonely Planet. Hollywood’s over-40 A-list actors continue to win the affections of beefy younger men, with Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth being the latest romantic pair.
Netflix just gave us a first look at Dern, 57, and Hemsworth, 34, in the unexpected love story, and based on these sets alone, we know it’s going to a gorgeous film if nothing else.
Here’s everything we know about the streamer’s latest, Lonely Planet:
What is Lonely Planet about?
According to Netflix, the story goes something like this: “At a retreat in Morocco, a woman meets a young man whose acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating, life-altering love affair.”
The movie’s Netflix landing page specifies that Katherine Loewe (Dern) is a newly single novelist who hopes that a writing retreat can cure her writer’s block. On the retreat, she meets Owen Brophy (Hemsworth), who um, gives her something to write about.
Who is making Lonely Planet?
The film is written and directed by Susannah Grant, a successful screenwriter whose credits include Pocahontas, Ever After, and Erin Brockovich.
Per IMDb, the cast includes Dern, Hemsworth, Diana Silvers (Space Force, Booksmart), and an international cast of TV and character actors.
“What drew me to the story was the exploration of identity and self-worth within relationships, especially in a world as intellectually charged as the literary scene,” Dern said in a Netflix press release. “The dynamic between the younger man and the older, established writer intrigued me because it’s not just about romance—it’s about finding someone who truly sees and understands you, which is something deeply human and relatable.”
She also sang Hemsworth’s praises; the pair became fast friends during the shoot, which was on location. “Liam was pure magic,” Dern said. “He became not only a buddy and a confidant through our Moroccan adventure, but our shared longing [for] honesty and intimacy in all relationships was very moving to me. We were very aligned, so getting to tell this story together meant the world…and he is friggin’ hilarious, so I laughed the entire time.”
