Looking For Youth Hockey In Swan Hills?

·2 min read

Summer is winding down, and the kids are just heading back to school. While it's hard to bid the summer goodbye, we can take comfort in knowing that it's almost hockey season!

Youth hockey is alive and well in the Hills with Swan Hills Fun Hockey (SHFH), and they're gearing up for 2022. SHFH is open to children and youth from 4 – 16 and provides an excellent opportunity for kids of all skill levels, whether they are just learning to skate or have been playing for years.

SHFH is a member with FunTeam Alberta; a non-profit organization focused on supporting community-based sports programs for children, youth, and adults. FunTeam Alberta was founded in 1990 with the recognition of a need for community-based sporting opportunities that cost less and were more focused on maximizing enjoyment.

As a part of FunTeam Alberta, SHFH is less competitive than other organizations. They focus more on encouraging fair play, developing social and physical skills, teamwork, and equal participation opportunities (regardless of skill level).

SHFH is less expensive than Minor Hockey and requires less of a time commitment. Practices will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with 2 – 3 games a month. Scheduled games will be booked for Saturdays but not on during holidays. Travel for games and tournaments will be kept within two hours of driving time.

Registration is $50 for new players and $300 for returning players ($250 if two or more siblings are registering) to cover ice rentals and tournaments. There is sponsorship from local companies available for families that need assistance with the registration fees on a confidential basis.

Players will be sporting new jerseys this year thanks to the efforts of hard-working volunteers, the Swan Hills community's generosity, and sponsorship from Aspenleaf Energy.

Parents interested in signing up their children or youth are asked to contact Jen Stenberg at (780) 333-1576. Jen will also be at Registration Night on Tuesday, Sept. 6, from 5 – 7:00 PM at the Keyano Centre.

There is always room for more players of all ages, but SHFH is really hoping for more youth aged 10 -16 to ensure a full team within that age range.

SHFH is always on the lookout for volunteers. Interested individuals will require a criminal record check and can contact Jen Stenberg at the phone number listed above.
