Looting Reported Amid Demonstrations on Anniversary of 2019 Protests in Chile

Police in Chile reported instances of looting and arson across the country on October 18 amid anti-government protests.

The protests marked two years since the start of a mass protest movement against inequality in 2019, which led to Chileans voting to rewrite the constitution. They also coincided with the lead up to Chile’s federal elections due to take place on November 21.

Video shared by a local news website RioenLinea shows a group of people on the streets of Valdivia in the Los Ríos region. An individual can be seen trying to break in to an upper window of a McDonald’s, as fires burn nearby.

Police said at least 30 people had been arrested across the country on Monday. Credit: @rioenlinea via Storyful
