Lottery winner eats dinner and relaxes — then checks to see how big his jackpot is

A 32-year-old man was leaving his workplace when he got an email from the Michigan Lottery.

The email informed him he had a prize to claim — and he “figured (he) must have won big,” according to a Nov. 9 news release from lottery officials.

But the Macomb County man didn’t immediately check to see if his assumption was correct.

“I went home, ate dinner, relaxed for a bit, and then finally logged in to my account to see how much I’d won,” he told lottery officials.

That’s when the lottery player realized he had won a $400,017 Fantasy 5 jackpot prize, according to the release. He had matched the winning numbers — 16-17-21-28-33 — during the Oct. 16 drawing.

“When I saw $400,017 pending, I was so happy!” the man recalled when claiming his winnings. “This prize couldn’t have come at a better time.”

He plans to use his prize money to pay bills and save, officials said.

Macomb County is part of the northern Detroit metropolitan area and borders Lake St. Clair.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.
