Love Lock installation under consideration by Vancouver Park Board
Sweethearts in Vancouver might soon have a place to affix a lock to symbolize their undying love.
The park board is considering hiring a local artist to create a public 'Love Lock' installation and Vancouverites would have a say at which one of three potential locations — English Bay Beach, Kitsilano Beach and Queen Elizabeth Park — the artwork would be placed.
The tradition of attaching a love lock is popular in other cities such as at Paris's Pont des Arts and New York's Brooklyn Bridge, but in both cases, the padlocks had to be removed for safety reasons.
The parapet railing on the Pont des Arts in Paris collapsed under the massive, 45 metric tonnes weight in 2014 and the locks were removed earlier this month.
Vancouver, too, has had a fledging attempt with love locks appearing on the Burrard Bridge and the chain link fences of the Plaza of Nations along the False Creek seawall, but both were removed by the city's engineering department.
Now, the city is hoping to follow the lead of other cities, such as Toronto, Seoul and Moscow that have created public art installations for love locks.
The park board will consider the staff report on the love lock installation on July 6.
