Luke Wilson Gives Update on “Legally Blonde 3” and Brainstorms Idea to Cast Himself in TV Series Prequel
Wilson pitched an idea for whom he could play in the upcoming 'Legally Blonde' prequel series, as he explored the idea of a third film on the 'Today' show
Luke Wilson wouldn't miss a chance to revisit the Legally Blonde universe.
The Horizon: An American Saga actor, 52, spoke with Savannah Guthrie on the Today show Tuesday, June 18, where the anchor asked him what he knows about a potential Legally Blonde 3.
"Well, there's this young upstart Barbie that we’ve got to deal with," joked Wilson, laughing. "No, I haven't heard anything myself."
In June 2018, Reese Witherspoon, who played the iconic Elle Woods in the first two Legally Blonde films, confirmed that she's reprising her role in a third installment of the beloved rom-com franchise. Roughly a year later, the actress told Entertainment Tonight that she'd seen a version of the screenplay but had yet to shoot anything.
"I talked to Reese a couple of years ago and some of the other cast members," Wilson told Guthrie, 52. "I think everybody would be up for doing it. But Reese is such a sharp person and I think she just wants to make sure that the script is really good, if it gets done."

Wilson, who played Elle's love interest Emmett Richmond in the Legally Blonde films (released in 2001 and 2003), also said he'd "just heard about" the upcoming Prime Video prequel series, which was announced in May. Titled Elle, it will be produced by Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine.
Witherspoon, 48, will serve as an executive producer for the series, which will follow Elle Woods through her high-school years, long before her time as the nation’s premier lawyer in pink. According to a release shared with PEOPLE, the prequel will delve into “the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde film.”
"Maybe you could visit [Elle] from the future?" Guthrie suggested to Wilson, about a potential role he could play in the show.
"Yeah or play Emmett's dad or something like that?" he replied. "[Reese is] great, so hopefully we'll do something."

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Wilson confirmed he hasn’t “heard anything about” another sequel" but the cast "had a Zoom meeting a year or two ago."
“It wasn't a meeting about the movie ... I don't know what it was, but it was great to see [Witherspoon] and the other actors," he said.
