Mac Cosmetics has become the latest beauty company to offer its help during the global coronavirus pandemic, utilising its existing Viva Glam campaign to support those who are most vulnerable.

The cult-status make-up brand has pledged to donate $10 million (approximately £815,ooo) from the initiative, which uses the sales of special Viva Glam lipsticks.

It will split the generous sum between 250 organisations all over the world, from those delivering emergency food supplies to those helping test and treat diagnosed cases.

Created 25 years ago, in 1994, the Mac Viva Glam campaign was founded in response to another pandemic - the Aids crisis - and has since raised over $500 million for local organisations.

For each of the Viva Glam lipsticks (of which there are three), purchased in the UK and Ireland, 100 per cent of the value (excluding VAT) is traditionally donated to an array of good causes.

Now, in the light of coronavirus, the brand has decided to focus on organisations which are supporting those at higher risk during the COVID-19 pandemic, including those living with HIV.

“Viva Glam has never been about one cause, but about supporting vulnerable communities,” said the chairman of the Mac Viva Glam Fund, John Demsey. “It was created many years ago simply as a hardship fund for people who needed safety nets. To help people affected by COVID-19 is a continuation of the principles Viva Glam was founded on.”

Individuals who are HIV positive fall into the at-risk for the deadly coronavirus, alongside others who are immunocompromised, so compassion for the community who were at the heart of the initiative's launch continues to fuel the brand's actions.

As for UK charities specifically benefiting from the donation, they include Positive East in London, which provides counselling, welfare benefit advice, peer support and psychology services for those living with HIV. The service has recently had to move online and the donation from Mac will support this evolution.

The Viva Glam campaign will also continue to raise money to support at-risk communities among women and girls and LGBTQ+, meaning those traditionally supported don't fall by the wayside.

Getting involved in the campaign is as simple as purchasing a lipstick, (which you can then post about on social media with the #VivaGlam).

With three universally flattering shades of light pink, deep pink and red and a RRP of £17.50 (meaning almost £15 is being donated each time), there's never been a better time to upgrade your lip colour.
