The Macdonald Bridge: What you need to know this Natal Day weekend

Getting around this Natal Day weekend in Halifax could be a bit trickier than usual, as the Macdonald Bridge will be closed.

According to the bridge commission's website, the bridge will be open from 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Natal Day — Aug. 1.

The bridge will be closed both Saturday and Sunday to accommodate replacing one segment, as well as other work, as part of the Big Lift project that aims to replace the aging infrastructure.

People hoping to take in the Natal Day fireworks at Alderney Landing on Sunday will have to take a different route.

Work on the bridge won't interfere with plans for the Monday morning Natal Day Parade in Dartmouth.

This weekend's work is happening at the Halifax-end of the bridge, and will be the last piece of segment work on the main span.

Once the last of these segments are complete, work begins to accommodate pieces coming in by truck instead of by barge.
