Madrid Zookeeper Seriously Injured in Gorilla Attack

A keeper at Madrid Zoo was left with serious injuries after she was attacked by a gorilla on September 27.

According to a statement by the zoo, the zookeeper entered the gorilla enclosure to do her usual morning routine.

“Upon entering a delimited area with a triple door, the caretaker met Malabo, a 29-year-old male gorilla, who had accessed it,” the zoo said.

The gorilla then attacked the zookeeper, before a team managed to remove the animal, who was later tranquilized.

The zookeeper was transferred to the Clinico San Carlos hospital, and is being treated for head and chest trauma, as well as multiple fractures to her thorax, Angel Casas, a health official, said in a statement.

The zoo said it was investigating how the animal was present at the same time as the keeper. Credit: Emergencias Madrid via Storyful
