Male cyclist killed in hit-and-run in Whitchurch-Stouffville

1 dead after Richmond Hill crash

A 20-year-old male cyclist is dead after he was hit by a vehicle in a hit-and-run in Whitchurch-Stouffville early Tuesday.

York Regional Police received a call about the death near Ninth Line and Bethesda Side Road at 6 a.m.

A person driving by in a vehicle saw the cyclist lying on the road in the area and called police, Const. Marina Orlovski, spokesperson for York Regional Police, said Tuesday.

The man, of Whitchurch-Stouffville, died of his injuries after being hit and the driver that struck him did not remain on the scene, police said.

Police seeking witnesses

"We are not really aware of what time it actually happened," she said.

"It is a little bit of a remote area so there isn't probably a lot of traffic there and there aren't a lot of homes there as well.

"That's really why we're appealing to anyone who may have been in the area last night, during the evening, and closer to 6 o'clock this morning if they may have seen something."

Houses are spaced far apart in the area, she added.

Next of kin have been notified.

Anyone who saw the cyclist in the area before 6 a.m. or who knows of a vehicle with "fresh damage" is urged to call police.

Ninth Line is closed at Bethesda Side Road as officers continue to investigate.
