Arrests made after south Osborne shooting sends man to hospital

A man was taken to hospital in critical condition, and two suspects were later arrested, after shots were fired in Winnipeg's South Osborne area on Tuesday afternoon.

Police say they were called to the area of Nassau Street South and Taft Crescent at 2:15 p.m.

A male victim was taken to hospital. Police did not release details about the victim, such as his age or his condition.

A person who lives on Nassau Street told CBC News the victim was seen running down the street before turning left onto Taft just after 2 p.m.

Neighbours came out and held towels against the victim's upper body, said the resident, who did not want to be named.

"It looked like he had a bullet hole in his shoulder. He was conscious. He moaned in pain when they moved him from the ground to the stretcher," the resident said.

"It all happened pretty quick. The police were here pretty quick, within five minutes of the shots."

The resident believes the incident was a drive-by shooting that has shaken a normally quiet neighbourhood.

Another person in the area said he heard "a couple of shots" fired around 2 p.m. but didn't think anything of it because firecrackers are often set off in the neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, Danielle Champhene, the victim's sister, said the shooting left her in disbelief.

"I find it heart-breaking and all I can feel is anger throughout my body that someone would want to do this to my brother," said Champhene.

Marion chase connected

Police later arrested two suspects after a chase that ended in the 500 block of Marion Street at about 5 p.m.

Police would not say whether any charges have been laid.
