Police are searching for multiple suspects in connection with a shooting that left one man dead in Toronto on Wednesday night.

The shooting happened in the area of Lawrence Avenue East and Mossbank Drive, east of Scarborough Golf Club Road. Police said they are looking for multiple suspects.

Several callers reported hearing gunfire at 8 p.m. and seeing someone lying on the ground, police said. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds.

Duty Insp. Kristy Smith said despite live-saving efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are searching for multiple suspects in connection with the shooting but did not provide the exact number, Smith said.

She added that police don't yet have specific suspect descriptions.

Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation. Officers have taped off a large area outside a residential building and were canvassing the neighbourhood on Wednesday night.

Police are urging the public to use caution in the area.
