Man, 69, found dead after fire breaks out at Lachine apartment

A 69-year-old man is dead after a fire broke out Monday evening at an apartment building in Lachine.

Just before 9 p.m., a call came in to 911 about a medical emergency, said Martin Guilbault, an operations chief with the Montreal fire department.

When firefighters arrived at the building, on the corner of Victoria and 34th avenues, they found the man's unit had been on fire, but that it was under control.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. It is still unclear exactly how he died.

The man lived there with his wife, according to neighbour Sandro Baron. She was away and returned home yesterday to find out her husband had died.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental, but it is still unclear how and where it started. There doesn't appear to have been a working smoking detector in the apartment, Guilbault said.

The investigation has been turned over to the Montreal police's arson squad, which looks into fatal fires.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the man's cause of death.
