Man accused of assaulting family flees in vehicle, almost hits officer, police say

Inmate died days after force used in arrest, police watchdog says

A 43-year-old man is accused of assaulting three people, fleeing arrest and nearly running over a Winnipeg police officer.

Police arrived at an apartment block on Andrews Street early Sunday morning after reports a man was assaulting his female partner and two children, Const. Jay Murray said Wednesday.

Police found a man locked in a vehicle. After asking him multiple times to get out of the vehicle, police tried to force him out.

That's when he put his vehicle in reverse, nearly hitting an officer who jumped out of the way, Murray said.

The man sped off and crashed into a fenced compound near Main Street and Partridge Avenue, Murray said.

"It was quite the incident," he said. "I saw pictures of the damage today.… This individual is, I think, lucky to have been released from hospital."

The man was charged with several offences, including three counts of assault, assaulting a peace officer and breach of probation.
