Man accused of murdering pizza delivery man to face trial next year

Dartmouth businessman's new trial on sex assault charges delayed by a year

A man accused of killing a pizza delivery man in Dartmouth more than six years ago may finally go to trial next summer.

Randy Desmond Riley is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Donald Chad Smith, who was gunned down in Dartmouth's Highfield Park on Oct. 23, 2010.

Riley wasn't arrested and charged until the summer of 2013. He's been in custody ever since.

Three previous trial dates have been set for Riley, who has had difficulty securing a lawyer to represent him.

This morning, defence lawyer Brian Church told a Nova Scotia Supreme Court judge that he will represent Riley at trial.

But Church said he could not familiarize himself with the case in time for a trial that was scheduled to begin in early January. Instead, the trial before judge and jury, has been moved to June of next year.
