Man accused of shooting brother throws explosives at officers chasing him, MI cops say

The accused gunman shot a police sergeant, authorities said.

A man accused of shooting his brother led Michigan officers on a high-speed chase, shooting at them and throwing explosives, police said.

The accused gunman, who injured a Jackson Police Department sergeant in the barrage of gunfire, was eventually shot and killed as multiple law enforcement agencies converged on the scene Nov. 6, according to Michigan State Police.

The man shot is accused of shooting his brother in Lenawee County about 4:30 p.m., state police said. The 34-year-old victim was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, according to the Daily Telegram.

The accused shooter drove away and was tracked into neighboring Jackson County, according to the news release. Law enforcement officials began chasing after him as he fled “at a high rate of speed,” police said.

Within a minute, he began shooting at the officers and deputies, hitting one of them in the arm, state police said. The sergeant was taken to a hospital, where authorities said he is listed in good condition.

At some point during the chase, the man threw pipe bombs out of his vehicle, causing some to explode, according to police.

Some vehicles and homes were shot at during the chase, state police said, adding that only the one sergeant was injured.

The accused gunman was struck during the shootout, and officers tried to save him, but he died after he was taken to a hospital, according to the news release.

The identity of the man has not been released as of Nov. 7.

State police said some of the pipe bombs the man is believed to have thrown out of his vehicle may still be along the roadway. Anyone who finds them is asked to call 911 and not pick them up.

The incident, which involved the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and the Jackson City Police Department, has led to a criminal investigation by Michigan State Police, authorities said.
