Man accused in Toronto street beating granted bail
A man accused in a brutal assault on a downtown Toronto street that left a man fighting for his life has been granted bail.
Fabio Joel De Mello, 27, is accused of hitting another man over the head, after an apparent dispute near Dundas and Lisgar streets in the early hours of June 28.
The victim, Daniel MacLeod, 22, was walking home from a bar when police say he was approached by a man and a woman.
A verbal altercation ensued and MacLeod was struck in the head with a weapon, police say.
MacLeod is now clinging to life in hospital and has subsequently undergone surgery, suffered two strokes and is fighting pneumonia.
Doctors are not sure if he will live, or how he will fare if he does survive.
Toronto police arrested De Mello on June 7, more than a week after the assault occurred. He has been charged with aggravated assault.
De Mello was granted $100,000 bail in a Toronto court on Tuesday. He must stay away from bars or establishments where alcohol is the primary product sold and he cannot be in possession of any firearms.
He is due to return to court on Aug. 7.
