Man allegedly involved in Plateau hit and run to be brought to Montreal

Arrest warrant issued for suspect in fatal Plateau hit and run

A 33-year-old man police say was involved in a fatal hit and run in the Plateau will be brought to Montreal from Ontario in the coming days.

Ontario Provincial Police officers say the man was arrested for driving a vehicle that was swerving on a highway near West Nipissing, Ont., Monday morning.

When police found him, they realized the 2012 silver Chevrolet Silverado he was driving was stolen from Montreal.

The vehicle matched the description and licence plate of the one involved in the hit and run that killed 79-year-old Zélia Araujo Sunday, said OPP Const. Louise Monette.

Montreal police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils said investigators were able to place the man arrested in Ontario at the wheel of the vehicle that struck Araujo.

The man is facing charges in Ontario. He appeared in a North Bay court Tuesday for a bail hearing, but it was postponed until Thursday. He remains in custody.

He will be brought to Montreal once his legal proceedings in Ontario are finished, Chèvrefils said. Montreal investigators are in the process of getting a warrant to arrest him.

Montreal police investigators are heading to North Bay to retrieve the vehicle.
