Man arrested for alleged robbery, firing weapon at police at Overland Park McDonald’s

A man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a robbery after he allegedly shot at police officers in a McDonald’s parking lot, police said.

Officers responded around 5:15 a.m. to calls near College Boulevard and Oakmont Street on a reported aggravated assault. Calls came in from a McDonald’s employee and another woman who told police a man pointed a gun at them, said Officer John Lacy, a spokesman with the Overland Park Police Department.

In a traffic camera, officers saw the suspect sitting on a vehicle in the McDonald’s parking lot around 5:30 a.m. The owner of the vehicle, a McDonald’s employee, came out of the business and confronted the suspect, Lacy said. The suspect could be seen pointing his firearm toward the vehicle owner, but he did not fire his weapon, Lacy said.

The owner of the vehicle went back inside and called police.

When officers arrived, they allegedly saw the suspect committing an armed robbery in the parking lot, Lacy said. Officers took cover and gave several commands to the suspect to drop his weapon.

The suspect then allegedly aimed his gun, an illegally modified high-powered rifle, toward one of the officers and shot several times.

Eventually, the gun stopped firing. Lacy said it is unknown if the suspect’s gun went empty or jammed. The suspect then dropped the gun and officers took him into custody.

Overland Park Police officers did not fire their weapons during the incident and no one was hurt in the gunfire, Lacy said.

The suspect is being held in the Johnson County Adult Detention Center.
