Man arrested after June standoff pleads not guilty

Daniel Beaupré, 25, came into the Moncton courtroom handcuffed and smiling. Frequently looking around the room, he mouthed a profanity at the gallery part way through the proceedings.

Beaupré is charged with using a restricted weapon in a careless manner, discharging a firearm at a vehicle, and possession of a firearm while prohibited.

Speaking on behalf of his client Wednesday, defence lawyer Christian Libotte said Beaupré is pleading not guilty to each charge. The accused elected to be tried by a judge alone in provincial court.

A bail hearing had been scheduled, but according to Libotte, "after reviewing the evidence and talking to my client we have decided that he is going to waive his right to have a bail hearing."

Judge Anne Dugas-Horseman set a trial date for Oct. 30. Five days have been set aside for the proceedings. Libotte said he'll check back with the court of Sept. 29 to make sure he's received disclosure.

On June 25, police were called to the High Street area of Moncton at about 7:20 a.m. because of a report of shots being fired.

For nine hours, police with carbine rifles stayed in the area where the incident took place.

At the time, a witness told CBC News she heard five shots, then saw a man standing with a gun and someone else in a vehicle driving away.

Stephanie Mawson, 26, was also arrested and remains free on conditions. She is expected back in court on Aug. 8.

Police say no one was injured in the incident.
