Nearly 13 years ago, Keith Crowell was nicked at his barbershop — usually an uneventful scenario. But in Crowell’s case that accident led to years of struggle with massive keloid scars on his face and neck. The cut on his face never healed and the keloid tissue continued to grow. At one point he suffered with over 40 pounds of flesh on his face.

Crowell’s disfigurement was painful and debilitating. Yet he was denied help from his insurance. After Crowell was profiled by WHNT News in Milwaukee back in November 2016, viewers began to write in wanting to help him. With the aid of complete strangers, Crowell was able to raise over $25,000 in donations, funds he has used to travel to New York City and undergo plastic surgery with specialists to remove the keloids.

“A lot of friends are in shock that it’s actually happening,” Crowell told WHNT News.

After two visits to NYC, Crowell is now free of the keloids and feels his life has completely changed. “I feel a lot lighter. It’s a lot of weight off my shoulders. I’m energetic. I feel more of myself. I feel more alive,” Crowell said.

He is also more than thankful for all the help he received — without which it’s clear he would have had to continue to suffer the extreme condition of his disfigurement for the rest of his life. “Thank you for your support and thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you’ve done for me,” Crowell told his Good Samaritans.
