Man charged with 1st-degree murder in death of 19-year-old near Riverview

A 51-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a 19-year-old man Sunday night in Upper Coverdale, an unincorporated community near Riverview, say RCMP.

Southeast District RCMP were called about someone causing a disturbance on Osprey Road at around 10:15 p.m., Cpl. Jullie Rogers-Marsh said in a news release Tuesday morning.

Police found Evan Straight, also of Upper Coverdale, dead with what appeared to be a gunshot wound.

A 51-year-old man was arrested at the scene.

Donald Gary Kyle of Upper Coverdale appeared before a judge by "tele-remand" on Monday night and was charged with the first-degree murder, said Rogers-Marsh.

Kyle remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Moncton provincial court on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

Rogers-Marsh would only say Kyle and Straight knew each other, but she would not elaborate.

Multiple RCMP members remained at the scene Tuesday morning. One was filming the exterior of the home, which property records say is owned by Kyle. A glass door on the back of the home appeared to be broken.

Several neighbours on Osprey Road said Kyle had performed automotive work for them at a garage on the property.

Fred Carter expressed shock that his neighbour had been charged.

"He's the last person in the world I would think would do something like that," Carter said. "But I don't know him personally. I only know him as a mechanic. I go up and get my car fixed, oil changed and stuff like that. I talk to him, he's a hell of a nice guy in my opinion.

"It's shocking to hear something like that, that it happened right next door."

"I'm just so sorry that happened," Theresa Carter said. "I'm just shaking."
