Man charged after firing a gun inside Igloolik home, and pointing weapon at police

Man gets 7 years for trying to kill another man with a screwdriver

A man in Igloolik is facing a list of charges after an armed standoff with police early Saturday morning.

RCMP say the 23-year-old man surrendered himself to police after a family member intervened and took a firearm away from him.

Police also say their investigation revealed the man had discharged a firearm inside a house while seven other people were inside.

Two RCMP officers arrived on scene at the residence around 4 a.m. on Saturday and were confronted by the man pointing a firearm at them.

The officers backed up, set up containment of the house and began de-escalation negotiations with him over the phone, according to an RCMP news release.

A family member in the home was able to take the weapon from him, police say, and the suspect then walked out of the house and surrendered peacefully.

He is charged with three counts of pointing a firearm, three counts of assault with a weapon, careless use of a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm, assault and uttering threats.

Police say two firearms were seized during the incident, as well as numerous rounds.

There were no injuries.

The man remains in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit on June 6.
