Man charged with first-degree murder in fatal east-end van hit-and-run

A man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the hit-and-run death of 27-year-old Steven Doyle more than one week ago.

Last week, police said Doyle, known around the Regent Park community as "Steve-O," was struck by a blue Dodge Caravan travelling at a high rate of speed near Gerrard Street East and Jarvis Street around 5:45 p.m. on August 15.

Police released security camera footage from the area showing the van's driver. According to Toronto police Det. Steve Henkel, the footage showed the moment the driver abandoned the van and fled on foot. Police located the van later that evening.

During a news conference last Wednesday, police said the driver deliberately drove onto the sidewalk and struck Doyle, but had yet to confirm the motive.

Police also believed that at the time of the incident, Doyle was with one or two other men.

Investigators pleaded with the public to come forward with information about the driver and issued a detailed description.

On Wednesday, police arrested and charged Ayubullo Mohammad-Daud, 21, of no fixed address with first-degree murder.
