A man has been arrested and charged for a vehicle collision near Trochu, Alta., involving two fatalities last Friday.

Richard Douglas Bell, 42, of Elnora, Alta., is charged with two counts of dangerous operation causing death and two counts of impaired operation causing death, according to a news release from Three Hills RCMP. Bell is also charged with impaired operation of a vehicle and refusal to give a sample.

Bell is in custody and will appear in Drumheller Provincial Court on June 24, RCMP say.

At about 10 p.m. on June 17, Three Hills RCMP were dispatched to a collision on Highway 21 just north of Trochu, the release said.

Two vehicles were travelling northbound on Highway 21 in Kneehill County when the second rear ended the first, RCMP say. This caused the first car to drive across the road where it was then hit by an oncoming semi truck.

The occupants of the first car, a 20-year-old female and a 21-year-old male, were declared deceased at the scene.
