Man City vs Newcastle, Premier League preview: Prediction, kick-off time, team news, TV, live stream, h2h, odds

Pep Guardiola will want a response from Manchester City against Newcastle United after the deposed champions' latest Premier League defeat.

Man City's last two results perhaps tell the story of their season: Guardiola's side tore apart Liverpool 4-0 in the new champions' coronation game, but City then went on to lose 1-0 at Southampton.

City have racked up nine League defeats this term, and Guardiola needs to see some spirit from his side as he plots a title challenge for next season.

As for Newcastle, the Magpies are mathematically safe from relegation - and there remains a slight hope of a top-half finish if results go their way.

Date, time and venue

Man City vs Newcastle is scheduled for a 6pm BST kick-off on Wednesday, July 8, 2020.

The match will be behind closed doors at Etihad Stadium with no fans due to be present inside the stadium due to government guidelines regarding coronavirus.

How to watch

TV channel: Man City vs Newcastle will be televised live on BT Sport 1, with coverage starting from 5:45pm.

Live stream: BT Sport subscribers will be able to watch the match online via the video player and the BT Sport app.

Team news

Sergio Aguero is Man City's only major absentee. The Argentina striker remains sidelined with a knee injury and is facing a race against time to be fit for the resumption of the Champions League next month.

City manager Pep Guardiola otherwise has a full-strength squad to choose from, while John Stones has been guaranteed a rare start.

Man City provisional squad: Ederson, Bravo, Walker, Cancelo, Stones, Otamendi, Laporte, Fernandinho, Garcia, Harwood-Bellis, Zinchenko, Mendy, Gundogan, Rodri, D Silva, De Bruyne, B Silva, Foden, Sterling, Mahrez, Doyle, Jesus.

For the visitors, Steve Bruce is facing a selection headache. Frontmen Allan Saint-Maximin (fatigue), Miguel Almiron (thigh) and Andy Carroll (groin) are all doubts following their exertions against City in the FA Cup quarter-final and Bournemouth and West Ham in the league in the last 10 days and will be assessed.

Isaac Hayden limped out of Sunday's 2-2 draw with the Hammers with a hamstring strain, the same injury which prevented fellow midfielder Sean Longstaff from playing a part in the game, and both are likely to miss out.

Newcastle provisional squad: Dubravka, Darlow, Yedlin, Rose, Krafth, Lazaro, Manquillo, Lascelles, Fernandez, Schar, Bentaleb, Shelvey, M. Longstaff, Ritchie, Saint-Maximin, Allan, Almiron, Joelinton, Carroll, Gayle, Muto.

Prediction: Man City 3-0 Newcastle

The Magpies were beaten 2-0 by City in the FA Cup last month, and it's difficult to look beyond a routine win for the hosts here - and it may even be a drubbing if they fancy it.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

Man City have won 23 of their 39 Premier League meetings with Newcastle.

The Magpies have won eight and drawn eight, but are unbeaten in their last two League games against Guardiola's side, drawing 2-2 at St James' Park in November.
