A man has confessed to a murder 13 years after his identical twin was found guilty for the crime.

Karl Smith (above, right) stunned a Chicago court last week after he admitted to the killing of Antwan Carter that his brother, Kevin Dugar (above, left), has served 13 years in jail for.

The 38-year-old took to the witness stand and said: “I’m here to confess to a crime I committed that he was wrongly accused of.”

He added: “We was acting as one. Where I was, he was, acting like each other.

“He pretended to be me, and I pretended to be him.”

The brothers, who have different surnames after Smith changed his to their mother’s maiden name, became active in gangs while growing up together.

Dugar was incarcerated in 2003 for shooting the victim during an attack on a group of rival gang members.

In 2014, Smith confessed to his brother’s lawyers through a sworn statement - one year after he confessed to his brother in a letter.

However, prosecutors are not convinced by the confession as Smith is already serving a 99-year sentence for an armed robbery.

The Assistant State’s Attorney said that he has “nothing to lose” and it now remains up to the judge to decide if Dugar should be given a new trial.
