Man dead in early morning crash in North York

Man fights for his life after hit-and-run at transit shelter downtown

A man is dead after two vehicles crashed early Saturday in North York, Toronto police say.

The crash occurred at Sheppard Avenue West and Sunfield Road, near Keele Street. Police and paramedics were called to the scene at about 3:20 a.m.

Paramedics tried to save the life of the man, who had life-threatening injuries, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

They took another person, a driver, to local hospital with minor injuries.

Vehicle damages bus shelter

One vehicle smashed into a TTC bus shelter. Debris was strewn over the road after the crash.

Staff Sgt. Tim Ralph, of Toronto police's traffic services, said officers are at the scene, reconstructing the crash and gathering evidence.

"They are going to ascertain what happened here," he said.

Police said Sheppard Avenue West continues to be closed eastbound at Sunfield Road, while Sunfield Road remains closed in both directions at Sheppard Avenue West.

The reopening time of the roads is not known and the closure has led to diversions of TTC buses.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with relevant dashboard camera or surveillance camera footage to come forward.
