Man dead in shooting in Columbia’s Melrose Heights neighborhood, police say

A man is dead following an overnight shooting on King Street, the Columbia Police Department announced Saturday.

Officers were called to the 1200 block of King Street in the Melrose Heights neighborhood around midnight. The area is east of downtown Columbia.

One person was detained for questioning, police said.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not yet publicly identified the man.

Police are still investigating and will continue to share updates, the department said in a post on X.
