Police call for witnesses after man shot to death in St. Lawrence Market area
Toronto police are appealing for witnesses after a 52-year-old man was shot to death in his St. Lawrence Market-area apartment unit Saturday morning.
Police received a call about the sound of gunshots at 25 Henry Lane Terrace, near The Esplanade and Lower Jarvis Street, at about 12:30 a.m.
Const. David Hopkinson, Toronto Police Services media officer, said there were also reports of screaming and yelling.
Officers arrived to find the victim with gunshot wounds to his body. He was pronounced dead on scene.
Det. Sgt. Mike Carbone said the incident has "all the earmarks of a targeted shooting" but that it is still too early in the investigation to confirm.
"Our appeal here today is for anyone who has information," he told reporters at a press conference Saturday afternoon.
Carbone said police have canvassed the area but are asking for anyone who may have been visiting the neighbourhood at the time to come forward if they saw or heard anything relating to the case.
No suspect information is available as yet, but Carbone said investigators are combing through surveillance footage.
In early September, a 21-year-old man was shot multiple times in the lobby of the same apartment building. Carbone says a connection between the two shootings "is something they would look into" as they go through the evidence.
The death is Toronto's 61st homicide of 2017.
