York police have identified a man who died after what's believed to be a targeted shooting in Markham on Thursday afternoon.

Police said they responded to reports of several shots fired outside a home near Harvest Moon Drive and Cottsmore Crescent, in the Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue area, around 3:45 p.m.

Officers arrived to find the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said in a news release Friday. The man was taken to a trauma centre, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as Chenguang Li, 50, from Markham.

Police said a black, 4-door Acura sedan with tinted windows was seen leaving the area, but it's not known if the shots came from the car.

Garth Morris said he was teaching tennis in nearby Highgate Park on Thursday afternoon, when he heard several popping sounds.

People thought the noise might be firecrackers, car exhausts or hammering, he said.

About half an hour later, police officers were walking through the area. That was when they learned the sound was gunfire, Morris said.

He said the incident is scary, considering the neighbourhood is very peaceful.

"We generally in this community are always thinking that everything is safe," Morris said. "Violence like this is not usual."

Anyone with information or who may have video surveillance of the area at the time of the incident is asked to contact investigators.
