Man dies in likely drowning at Sydney Mines beach

Cape Breton Police say a 58-year old man is dead after an apparent drowning at a beach in Sydney Mines on Sunday.

Witnesses described seeing the man standing in the water at the beach at the end of Ocean Street before he was spotted in distress.

People at the beach brought him to shore and police said someone attempted CPR on the man before emergency responders arrived.

A short time later he was taken to the Regional Hospital in Sydney, but he couldn’t be revived.

Police said they are investigating exactly what happened and an autopsy will be performed in Halifax.

Police are not releasing the name of the man until his family is notified.
