Man faces weapons charges after 7-hour standoff with police
A seven hour-stand off ended peacefully after a 34-year-old man had barricaded himself in an apartment in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Police said they got a call from the 1600 block of Ouellette Ave. at about 3 a.m. Police said the call came from a woman claiming a man was in her apartment with a knife breaking things.
The woman was able to leave the apartment safely, but the man barricaded himself inside and wouldn't cooperate with officers.
Police said the man continued to damage the woman's property while still holding a knife.
After police made contact with the man, they said he started to make threats.
Mike Lukas is a neighbour. He said he wasn't sure what was going on.
"After I woke up, all I could see is cops out the window, on the roof next door and the whole place was surrounded," said Lukas.
Officers closed off Ouellette Ave. between Hanna Street and Tecumseh Road while negotiators tried to convince the man to come out.
The man came out at about 10:30 a.m. and was arrested without incident.
He was taken to hospital for an assessment, and expected to appear in court for various weapons charges on Monday.
Police continue to investigate.
