A man was shot and killed in Mississauga late Wednesday, Peel police say.

The shooting happened around 10 p.m. in an alleyway at a residential complex near the corner of Glen Erin Drive and Brittania Road West.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Police released no further information about the man but told reporters more information may be disclosed later Thursday.

A person was seen running from the area after the gunshots, police said, though it's unclear if that person is a suspect at this point.

Peel's homicide bureau has taken charge of the investigation.

Neighbour Joanne Joseph told CBC News that she was watching television Wednesday she heard about a half dozen shots ring out in the night.

"I fell off the bed scared and ran to my sister's room," she said. Joseph found out today that someone in her complex had died, which left her troubled.

"Our neighbourhood is a very nice neighbourhood, and lately it has just been a lot of crimes and shots and stuff like that," she said.

Property manager Ram Chhetri said the man who died had been living in the housing complex for about five to seven years. The man was "very nice, very cooperative," he said.

Chhetri also said he had handed over security camera video to police after the incident.
