Man forced to go inside to pay for gas can’t resist Chiefs lottery game. It paid off
When Patsy and Danny Roberts pulled up to a Kansas gas station, they had no intentions of going inside the convenience store.
But then the couple from Lyndon discovered the card reader at the pump was broken, according to a Nov. 15 news release from the Kansas Lottery.
Danny Roberts went inside to pay for gas, and he spotted the $10 Kansas City Chiefs World Champions instant tickets, officials said.
“And he just couldn’t resist those Chiefs tickets!” his wife, Patsy, told lottery officials.
He decided to buy four Chiefs lottery tickets, then he gave them to his wife so she could scratch them as he continued driving, according to the release.
“I like to play one number at a time, that way I don’t miss anything when I’m counting up winning symbols,” Patsy Roberts told lottery officials. “On the second ticket, I had a winning spot.
“I revealed the prize amount underneath and it said ‘$75,000’ on it,” she continued. But she didn’t believe she had actually won the game’s top prize.
“I just assumed I was reading it wrong,” she recalled.
She and her husband stared at the ticket “in disbelief” before realizing they really had won $75,000, according to the release.
“The Lord has blessed us with the ability to now pay off pretty much all of our debt except for the house and car. No smaller bills to pay off,” Danny Roberts said when claiming their prize. “Now we can really focus on our retirement in a couple of years. This was such a huge blessing!”
They bought their winning ticket at TA Express in Edgerton, about 40 miles southwest of Kansas City and about 50 miles northeast from their home in Lyndon.
